Quotes:
"One fact about tracking is unequivocal: tracking leads to substantial differences in the day-to-day learning experiences students have at school."
in a classroom their should be a scheduled prepared so that students are prepared to learn. so that they can be ready to ask questions and be ready for their day. i'm not saying that everyday needs to be the same but their should be some type of routine. when tracking a student the result are not always going to be the same with every student one student might do really while the others are not doing well that dose not mean that those students who do well are the smartest it means that they are fast thinkers. while the other students just need a different why of showing they know their knowledge. and can show that they knew the what was being taught to them.
"In low-ability classes, for example, teachers seem to be less encouraging and more punitive, placing more emphasis on discipline and 'behavior and less on academic learning."
this is a big problem with tracking because kids don't test well and have low scores they automatically assume that the student isn't capable of handling a normal classroom. but that is not the case at all. if a teacher gives a test to the students and they have 10 minutes to complete it what is that showing. that is showing who's the smartest in the class that can write the fastest. some students need more time to think out their answers and have time to think without feeling the pressure of feeling rushed.
" Other important differences have been noted in the classroom atmosphere. Most teachers realize that for students, feeling comfortable in class is more than just a nice addition to learning. They also know that when teachers and students trust each one another, class time and energy just trying are freed up for teaching and learning"
if your students don't feel comfortable in your classroom and they feel like they are being tested on their every move then you need to change what your doing. a student should feel like they are welcome and that their are no stupid questions. students shouldn't walk into a classroom ready to fail. students should feel relaxed and ready to learn with an open mind.
