I believe that my service learning project is making a difference in the kids lives and how they view learning. When talking about Rodriguez i think about how In my service learning project i’m not in a ELL classroom but their is one student who knows both Spanish and English that i know of. I wasn’t aware of this until one day his mom came into the classroom to pick him up early. She had another person with her so that they could translate to the teacher and so that she could be understood as well. It was shocking because when helping him their didn't seem to be any diversity in his life. But when his mother came in he immediately switched to Spanish when speaking to her. i feel as though this is import to talk about because it shows the obstacle that this student had to go through in life. it must take a great amount of brain power for him to have the gift of knowing two languages. Also at such a young age. this also ties into SCWAAMP. The SCWAAMP article talks about categories in life that each person has. and about how diverse a person is weather its in language, race, or ethnicity. Some of the things i have noticed is race and ethnicity have no power over the kids in the classroom. They see right through it in my opinion. Everyone in the classroom gets along with everyone and none of the students show that it bothers them in anyway. and they don't see each other through color they see each other as a person.

  1. Hi Alex,

This is a good start to your Pecha Kucha. I think you can expand on your story about your own assumptions (SCWAAMP) about the boy who was bilingual. You write "It was shocking because when helping him their didn't seem to be any diversity in his life. But when his mother came in he immediately switched to Spanish when speaking to her." I wondered what you meant by your thinking the student had no diversity in his life. Can you add to this story and talk about the ways your expectations (and really the larger cultural expectations) of SCWAAMP were at work?

You end your blog with a nod to color-blindness - or saying that everyone doesn't see color in the classroom. This is another version of SCWAAMP -- not seeing color means that you may be assuming everyone has experiences that align with dominant identities. Seeing color, and gender, and social class means that you are recognizing the unique perspectives and experiences and histories each person brings to the classroom. See for example Furgus 2017: https://www.kappanonline.org/confronting-colorblindness/
