Quotes:
"had they been taught a second language like Spanish or french, they could have regarded as simply as that: another public language"
I chose this quote to write about because it has a lot of meaning to it in the way that I see it. I feel as though its trying to say that if children are taught about other languages and culture earlier on in their lives they would be less hesitant about learning it later. Some kids get really frustrated when trying to learn another language in middle school and high school because it may be the first time they have ever had to care about it. This quote shows that introducing kids to other cultures and languages sooner may help them later in life.
"At last, at seven years old I come to believe what had been technically true since my birth: I was an american citizen"
I chose this quote because it says a lot that this girl knows that she is a citizen of the united states and at the age of seven. Most kids at that age don't have to worry about something like that but its something that she had too. Also, most kids come in to this country at very young ages and don't know that they were coming in illegally. Most of them don't find out until they are older.
"Whenever id speak to my parents I would get their attention with eye contact alone."
I chose this quote be cause I thought it was interesting that she had stopped addressing her parents by mama and papa. Most kids address their parents as mom, dad, etc. But she stopped that once she had adapted to her new language of English. One would think that she would have kept referring to them they way she had done when she was younger but she felt as though it held her back talking in her native language.
I, and I'm sure many agree with you that most kids immigrating into this country with their parents have little to no knowledge of whether their citizenship is illegal or not, and that is entirely their parents fault and responsibility.
